ITV Appointments

The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) is a routine inspection to ensure your vehicle’s general roadworthiness. It must be carried out on private passenger vehicles once the four years has elapsed from its first registration date (including time spent outside of Spain before importation and reregistration). Up until ten years, the inspection is biennial. From ten years onwards, the inspection must be performed annually.

Contrary to popular myth, there is no ‘grace period’ for you to use your vehicle with an expired ITV. It is either valid, or it is not. Guardia ‘Traffico’ control points may be lenient if the vehicle is on its way to a pre-booked ITV appointment or to or from a garage for necessary repairs. However, this is all at the discretion of the officer performing the control stop. They may insist that the vehicle is taken to the ITV station onboard a ‘grua’ (low loader breakdown truck).

Vehicles without a valid ITV may be deemed to be without insurance in the event of a claim, as a current ITV certificate is required for your insurance to be valid.

Different rules apply to private hire vehicles, commercial and large passenger carrying vehicles
